Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Hawara or Illahun dated AD 395 – 642

A fragment of natural coloured woollen fabric with S twisted warps. Double row of thickly twisted wool along one side. Each embroidery stitch is worked over each warp to form an elongated oval with a geometric design. A woven border surrounds the oval. The embroidery is worked in natural coloured flax.
Plain woven with seven warps per centimetre and a very fine weft.
