Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Hawara or Illahun dated AD 395 – 642

Fragment of a red and blue woven fabric with tapestry woven borders, part of a tunic. Natural coloured wool warps with an S twist with red and blue finely woven ground. The blue wool section forms the centre with the red wool on either side. One side of the red woven wool is turned under, stitched in black wool. An orange floral repeating design is woven along the inner edge of the blue area. One edge is selvedge.
Plain weave with eight or nine warps per centimetre.
