Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Hawara or Illahun dated AD 395 – 642

A tapestry woven border slip stitched onto plain woven woollen fabric with a woven cream stripe. It comprises two designs, one of stylised floral shapes within swirling lines. The second has two bands of stylised birds in each with stylised floral motifs. A border of interlocking lozenge shapes in blocks of colour, red, yellow, green and blue edge the border.A small piece of thick twisted two ply thread is stitched to an edge. A small square of a separated dark purple woollen fabric with a woven blue design is also applied.
The tapestry has ten warps per centimetre. Plain woven fabric. Red woollen warps. There are ten warps and 28 wefts per centimetre.
