Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Faiyum dated AD 395 – 642

A portion of woollen tunic with wide band, tapestry woven, in purple wool. The band is divided into compartments, each having a grotesque human figure, with tree-like motifs in each corner. Separating these are narrow compartments containing an oval in which appear to be some Arabic letters. There is a rather elaborate border on each edge of the band. There are indications of other panels at the lower end of the cloth. A clumsy repair has been made at one part of the band.
