Ancient Egyptian linen fragment from Faiyum dated AD 395 – 642

Linen cloth, with woven border of linen yarns dyed red and deep blue. Complex selvedge, the weft passing over four lots of bundled warps, a number of red warps adjoin this selvedge. The ends of the warps have been looped into the weft, forming a ‘warp selvedge’. There are ten warps per centimetre. The weft is a plain weave forming stripes along woven edge. Thick selvedge to one side.
