Ancient Egyptian textile fragment from Oxyrhynchus dated AD 395 – 642

A linen band, tapestry woven in coloured wools and undyed flax. The edges are stiffened by working the weft over three lots of bunched warps. Beyond this is a cord of woven flax looped at intervals into the red wool border. Attached to this flax cord at one edge is a further plaited cord of flax and red wool. The centre of the band has alternating floral and rosette devices. The background is dark and light blue. The floral designs are pink with green or yellow stems. The rosette designs are pink circles with green in the centre, they are surrounded by natural coloured squares.
Tapestry with plaited edge. There are 11 warps per centimetre with two threads per warp. Embroidered thread outlines the floral motifs and central band.
