Ancient Egyptian textile fragment from Illahun dated AD 395 – 642

Conical hat, in brown felt with wide upturned brim of red felt with green woollen cloth binding round outer edge and line on inner edge. Fancy stitching along the quarters of the hat, with felted knob in centre. Lining of white felt.
Construction is felt, four different colours with slip stitched seams with decorative chain stitches on outer edges. Plain woven linen fabric encases the internal seam between hat and brim. Coarse plain woven. Blue woollen fabric strip trims the lower edge of the brim.
