This gallery sets a different tone and atmosphere to the previous vibrancy of Land & People. Beliefs takes a contemplative look at the funerary rituals of Ancient Egypt and displays some of the most significant items in the collection, including intricately decorated sarcophagi.
Floor to ceiling banners illustrate and describe the process of mummification to help visitors understand the care and importance of each stage of this ritual for which the Ancient Egyptians are renowned. Authentic spells from the Book of the Dead used in the ritual are included on each of the banners, written in hieroglyphs.
Central pyramid inspired cases are arranged in a structured symmetry and combine object display space with interactive engagements.
