Ancient Egyptian bone bead from Oxyrhynchus dated 332 – 30 BC

Bone cylinder bead with four incised lines running around the middle of it. Lines may have been infilled with black paste, or this may be mud from the site. The bead is strung on a strip of leather, which has been twisted together with another at both ends. This second strip goes across the outside of the bead. Two fragments of this leather remain in loose with the item. Modern fibres adhere to the leather from previous packing material.
