Carved hardwood face from a mummy case. Flat back with rounded, modelled upper surface. The face has hairline, eyes and eyebrows, nose and lips carved. It has all been covered in a layer of plaster which is now a dull grey or brown colour. No other colour survives. The edge of the face at the sides and chin is broken away, perhaps the face was set into a wig. There is some surface damage to the face’s left cheek, and a crack to the right hand side of its nose. The back has two projecting wooden pegs and the remains of a third, showing that it was probably the original surface joined to the case. There are traces of white paint or powder on the rear of the piece, and woodworm holes over which the wood has gone to a powdery orange colour, as well a modern hole from which a modern screw has been removed. A small paper label on the rear says Beni Hasan.
