Ancient Egyptian inlay eye from Hawara dated 30 BC – AD 395

Inlay eye. Egyptian alabaster block formed into the white of the eye on its outer polished surface. Traces of red glue or cement on the other sides. In the centre of the outer surface has been set a disc of amber coloured glass, with a disc blue or black glass or stone set into its centre to represent the pupil. The two discs are separated by a fine circle of copper alloy or glue or pigment with possibly copper in it, now corroded green. A hole has been placed behind the the pupil, through the calcite.
