Ancient Egyptian linen fragment

Printed linen cloth. The linen has been filled with an albuminous mixture on the printed side. The border pattern was then applied by the use of an engraved wooden block about five inches square. This was printed in red. Gold leaf was then applied over the whole surface of the pattern and stuck to the cloth in all the interstices of the pattern, the red colour forming a resist to the gilt.
