Ancient Egyptian model shield fragment from Deir el Bahari dated 2055 – 1985 BC

Half of a wooden model shield, probably once attached to a Nubian or Egyptian soldier figure. The shield is roughly rectangular and is cut straight at the bottom, and curved to a point at the top. The back is painted white, whilst the outer surface is painted white with a pattern of irregular brown ovals, in imitation of cow hide. There is a small circular notch in the back of the shield which may have enabled it to be attached to the figure.
