Ancient Egyptian plaque from Naukratis dated 699 – 500 BC

Roughly rectangular limestone plaque with a slightly curved back to it. The upper surface is crudely carved in raised relief, with the reclining figure of a nude female. She wears a wig or her hair swept up from her face. Eyes, nose and mouth are modelled. Her left arm lies across her body, her right is by her side. The pubic triangle is marked, as are the breasts. She has a necklace of beads painted on in black at her throat, and traces of a red line underneath that. At both her wrists are two black armlets, once infilled with red. On her left arm the one armlet is above the elbow. One corner of the piece has been stamped in modern black ink, with EGYPT 71. There is a piece of modern paper adhering to the back of plaque with 71 written over an earlier number. Probably used as a votive offering to request fertility.
