Ancient Egyptian scarf fragment from Matmar dated AD 395 – 642

One of 2 textile fragments. Ends of a tapestry woven woollen scarf. The purple panels are embroidered with interlaced ornament and a guilloche border. Buff coloured stripes with a design introducing the cross separate the purple panels. Warp carried through at the ends and knotted to form a fringe. Longer fringe of twisted wool stitched to ends of the scarf. Length of complete scarf unknown. Tapered in width from centre to ends.
