Ancient Egyptian textile bundle from Qaw el Kibir dated 1550 – 1069 BC

Cloth bundle containing fossilized bones.

Bundle was once tied together with modern string but has been opened prior to 2005 (when seen by TH), and bones are visible.

Largest complete bone identified by Dr Laura Bishop, Senior Lecturer in Palaeoanthropolgy at Liverpool John Moores University (with assistance from D Craven), spring 2007. Scaphoid of large antelope species (Bovidae, possibly wildebeest Connochaetes sp.). Left front leg.

“Date of bone because we couldn’t get a specific ID and it’s an extant species that’s been about for a million years. My own inclination would be that it’s inside 100,000 years, based on the state of the bone.” (DC, March 2009)
