Ancient Egyptian textile fragment from Faiyum dated AD 395 – 642

Part of linen tunic, with loops of a thick weft yarn pulled through face of cloth at every fourth shed. A dark purple wool yarn goes through the same shed. The pattern on the tunic is formed by pulling through the loose thick linen weft or the soft woollen weft. The linen is of a peculiar soft, silky texture. There are 18 warps and nine wefts per centimetre. There are three wefts p.w. 4th weft. Looped thread with three additional threads to hold the looped thread in position; within one pick.
