Ancient Egyptian thread from Matmar dated 3000 – 2686 BC

Curved piece of reed fibre thread of most elaborate construction. Round a central strand, formed of about five thin reed fibres and two or three flax yarns, of type A, thin reed fibres have been spirally wrapped. The ends of these outer fibres are locked into position by the commencing folds of the following length of fibre. Similar technique but on much smaller scale to that used for strands in basket work.
