Ancient Egyptian tomb model of a vat from Deir el Bahari Thebes dated 2055 – 2004 BC

The shallow vat probably represents the container for the fermenting bread mixture known as mash. Acquired with other model vats and jars (see 1907.90.3 items) The tall cylindrical vat would have been used to strain the mash, leaving the liquid beer to be transferred into the tall, shouldered jars. Flat circular top is painted white, with a few concentric circles of red dashed lines. The top rim and sides are painted red, and the drum overall is waisted. The base is unpainted, with a central hole for fixing to a model There is a large crack running across half of the top surface and down one of the sides. The opposite top edge is broken off. Some paint loss to sides.
Colour: red & white
