Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Antinoe dated AD 395 – 642

Thick heavy woollen fabric. A carpet weave. Warp of mingled green and self-colour, weft same, with thick wefts of self-colour and red woven over, looped and cut, forming lines of pile. Knotted ‘carpet’ possibly Ghordes Knot with two plain woven ‘beat up’ threads in between.
