Ancient Egyptian wool fragment from Hawara or Illahun dated AD 395 – 642

A tapestry woven border fragment with a design in dark red, mauve and yellow wool and natural coloured linen. It has a surface embroidered geometric design in ecru coloured linen thread. A scalloped border runs the length of the fragment along one side.
The tapestry has cream woollen warps with 12 warps per centimetre, S twist. The embroidery is of ecru linen thread with overcast stitches running along the woven warps.
