Thomas Holmes was born in Wigan in 1840. He was apprenticed to the firm of Thomas Moscrop, Oil Merchant, Druggist and Drysalter in Bolton, becoming a partner in the business in 1864 and the owner in 1881. He wrote three books about his travels, of which this was the last. He died in 1894.
