Ancient Egyptian mummy case from Saqqara dated 700 – 200 BC

Oblong copper alloy box. It is shaped like a shrine, with the sides flaring out a little towards the base plate, and a ridge just below the top plate. Both top and base plates projest slightly beyond the sides. One of the small ends is missing, and some of the skeletal contents that were within the box are now in a plastic bag within the box. The interior of the box appears to have been filled with white plaster, through which a channel has been cut which could be modern. On top of the box are the two feet of a bird of prey, with each having three toes pointing forwards and one to the rear. They were originally the base for a standing figure of the bird, probably a hawk, whose remains were placed inside the box. The feet are broken across the ankle. There is a rectangular slit behind the feet, which may have allowed the tip of the tail of the bird figure to be attached.
