Ancient Egyptian textile fragment from Tanis San el Hagar dated AD 395 – 642

Portion of linen tunic with tapestry woven bands about 50 mm wide stitched on. The band is on flax warps. The weft is red wool with lozenges worked in undyed flax thread. Border of purple wool with line of flax.

Tapestry and plain weave. Tapestry – 11 warps per cm. Tightly Z twisted flax. Linen – occasional 2 wefts per pick to create the sligh striped effect within the plain weave.
